Yesterday Steve and I took on the daunting task of registering. Well I didn't know it was going to be daunting until we were 1.5 hours into it.
To prepare I asked my sister to send me a list of brands and items that she'd recommend that we register for. Oh my... what a list. And she kept thinking of more. I got 4 emails from her. But thank goodness she was thorough because we were not ready to embark on this large task ahead of us.
But luckily we fueled up at Angelinas in Woodbury with the thickest french toast you can find in the galaxy. My mouth is drooling just thinking of it. Then we headed off to Dunn Brothers to fuel up some more with our favorite coffees, Pumpkin Pie Latte for me and a White Chocolate Carmel Mocha with Whip for Steve. He also had to grab his chocolate chip cookie and off we went.
Our first mistake was to start with Baby R Us and not Target. We were told to register fully at both, then pull up our registries on-line to price compare and just figure out what we like better and delete one of the same items off a registry.
Just walking into Baby R Us gives me anxiety. That place is huge and is full of one item with about 50 different variations and each variation has about 25 different brands... basically it has a ton of options. Which is fun but mind boggling.
Luckily, the staff was super nice and helpful. They gave us a checklist, recommended where we start so we don't get overwhelmed (too late honey) and off we went with our little scanner gun.
First item... stroller. Easy. There was only one option for a travel system stroller that was a running stroller. And two different colors. Check... Item done. Next please.
We skipped the other big stuff and went to bedding. We had a crib, just need a mattress. We just choose the 2nd to cheapest. They all looked the same, said the same thing, I really didn't care. Check... done. Mattress covers please.
Ummmm.... tell me this. There is a multi purpose mattress cover and a mattress pad. Do baby's really need both? What is the difference? Plus you have a sheet and then there is this thing that is used to protect the sheet. What? I didn't get it. So we just closed our eyes, shot the gun and hoped for the best. Know idea if we registered for a multi-purpose or a mattress pad. And the thing to protect the sheet seemed silly. We vetoed that item.
Basically that is how the rest of the day went. Huh? What is that? Do they really need that? Oh well... here it goes. Point... shoot.... registered.
But there is one thing we learned. Babies R Us is smart. They start you on one side and have you work your way to the other. Well one side takes forever and is exhausting. Your brain literally becomes mush, your feet and heels hurt, and your exhausted. Then you look to the other side of the store and realize.... I don't think I can make it. Then... your eyes gaze on these really comfy, too good to be true rocking chairs that are right in the middle and block your way to the other side.
I... Must... Sit... Down... And... Rest.
Then it's all over from there. You realize how amazingly comfortable these rocking chairs are. You realize you need one for the room and these aren't only comfortable they look nice too. In fact, you can customize and it will go perfectly in the nursery.
.... HALT....
$400! Awww man. Then you try out others and they just aren't quite as comfortable as the first. Then you start to rationalize with your self. But then you start to dream. HMMM I'm going to sit in this chair a lot. I heard you actually live in it. Maybe it's worth the investment.
That's when a smart husband steps in. Said he got his second wind and pulls you to the other side. Then you slowly forget about that really extremely beautiful comfy rocking chair.
Well, almost.
Good thing Baby D isn't expected to come for another 15 weeks. Which seems really soon! But really it's not. So I have time to change, look over and inspect what we actually all registered for. Pretty sure lots will be coming off Babies R Us and be added to Target. Target usually finds some way to save the day. They are amazing at that.
Or I might have to talk Mom into helping me. She is like Target. She's smart, looks good in Red, you can spend hours with her, and she simplifies life.
Registering IS overwhelming:-). The sheet protector things you mentioned... I learned a little tip: we put down the regular mattress pad and a sheet, then I layer a sheet protector and another sheet, a sheet protector and another sheet. This way if we end up with a mess in the middle of the night we only have to peel off the top layer and there are clean layers ready to go underneath.
ReplyDeleteAlso there's another sheet saver thing that goes over the sheet (pretty much just where the head goes) that comes in handy when the baby is young and spits up a lot. Once they get older and start scooting around that becomes pointless, but I found it to be helpful until then!
